Greg Glassman, a former gymnast, founded CrossFit in 2000. In his years coaching elite athletes, Coach Glassman found that the best way to achieve optimal fitness was not through specialization but rather through “constantly varied, functional movement, performed at high intensity.” In short, this means combining elements of Olympic weightlifting, gymnastics, sprinting, rowing and core conditioning to improve overall flexibility, strength, speed, endurance and agility.
“Constantly Varied” means every workout of the day (WOD) is different, incorporating a combination of these elements. At CrossFit Radius you will jump rope, climb ropes, swing kettle bells and flip tires. You will work at pull-ups, muscle ups, handstands, pushups, and handstand pushups. You will practice squats, dips, cleans, jerks, snatches and deadlifts as well as rowing, running and box jumps. Each day will bring different exercises always specifically designed to work on different muscle groups and/or cardiovascular strength.
“Functional Movement” refers to maintaining the safest, most-efficient position to power through a movement. There are plenty of misconceptions out there about CrossFit; the truth is much of what we do in our workouts mirrors activities in our daily lives. To the uninitiated, flipping a tire looks like crazy, “he-man” work. But if you’ve ever had to move a mattress up a flight of stairs, you already know the movement. Cleaning a medicine ball may appear odd, but consider what your body does when you place your suitcase in a plane’s overhead compartment. If you’ve ever lifted a heavy bag of dog food or peat moss, no one needs to tell you the importance of arching your back. CrossFit Radius will help you maintain the correct position in a workout – both to keep you and other safe as well as to maximize efficiency.
“High Intensity” is a concept that at first can be difficult for new CrossFitters to grasp. For many people, a workout’s efficiency is only proportionate to the amount of hours spent in the gym. You will never hear a CrossFitter say, “I had a great workout; I was in the gym for four hours!” You are much more likely to hear, “I finished in 8 minutes.” People come here skeptical that a high-intensity workout, done in a fraction of the time as they are used to, can lead to faster, better results. But results don’t lie.
The beauty of our sport is that we are all in it together, motivating one another. It’s a sport where the person last to finish the workout receives more high fives than the person first to finish.

Chris grew up in Oklahoma around family that suffered from heart attacks, diabetes, and cancer. At 19 he joined the United States Marine Corps, where he spent five years as an Infantryman. After coming home, Chris suffered from outbursts and confusion due to Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). He was prescribed medication to treat his PTSD. A fellow Veteran introduced Chris to CrossFit, which eventually helped him get off his medication. “Seeing so much camaraderie and teamwork put into the workouts reminded me of a Marine Corps philosophy of We Suffer Together, We Succeed Together." Now, completely off his medication and a CrossFit L1 Coach, Chris hopes to inspire other people to lead healthy life. “CrossFit may seem like its too much and only for the ultra-fit, but like I found out, it’s actually perfect for acquiring and maintaining a healthier quality of life.”

My journey with CrossFit started in the backyard of my brother’s house (July 2011) as a training program to help me prepare for the 2012 SoCal Tough Mudder. At that point I was 235lbs and not in a good state of physical or mental health. I never went to the gym and it definitely showed. I was overweight, sick and depressed. CrossFit changed all that for me. Pull-ups were impossible, running was unbearable and I had no clue what Olympic lifting was; it was a wake up call. Slowly but surely the weight fell off, muscle grew where I never thought it would and I was getting stronger, faster and healthier. Now here I am, 4 years into CrossFit and I am around 195lbs. Not only have I lost weight, I am much stronger, I’ve developed new skills and am enjoying a healthier lifestyle. I have CrossFit and a healthy diet to thank. CrossFit has opened my eyes to a multitude of opportunities, friends and life changing events; it is something that I cherish whole-heartedly. I believe that CrossFit has the potential to bring about the best version of you every single day whether it’s in the box or during everyday life. Apply what you learn in the box and take it elsewhere. Knowledge is power and at the bare minimum I hope to help people learn something every day.
Other sports I’ve played include Basketball since I was 8 (played varsity in high school & still play), Volleyball Since I was 10 (played club and was on traveling teams) and Tennis since I was 16 (2 years in high school and two years at Allan Hancock Community College).
As a new single father I am finding that time is not my own, however, when I do find myself with some “me time,” I enjoy working out.
Fun-fact: I used to be a hip-hop dance instructor. So from time-to-time I like to dust off the dancing shoes. I am also looking into taking up some ukulele lessons soon.
If you are just passing through town, we charge a drop-in fee of $20 per day or it’s on us if you buy a tee $25. If you are planning on being here for a week or so feel free to contact us and we can work with you depending on how frequently you think you will be attending classes. Please plan to arrive five minutes before scheduled class time so we can provide you with a waiver to sign (our insurance friends make us do this) and introduce you to our box. You can find our class schedule here.
You may find that CrossFit Radius does things a little differently than your “box" back home. We hope that you enjoy the change in scenery, clientele, maybe even music. If anything makes you uncomfortable, however, please let us know. We want to make sure you have the best experience.
